SEATTLE -- The Dawgs continued their winning ways this spring, defeating Western Washington, 2-0, on Thursday at Husky Soccer Field. Washington improved to 3-0 against collegiate teams this spring with the victory.

"We continue to improve in specific areas on both sides of the ball," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "I was pleased to get the victory and the shutout."

Kate Bennett and Jaclyn Softli contributed to the Viking defeat, scoring Washington’s only two goals of the game.

Bennett got things going, scoring the opening goal of the first half with a strike from 25 yards out. The 1-0 lead held up for nearly the entire game as Megan Kufeld, Sarah Shimer and Tori Burns combined for a shutout in net.

Nearing the end of the game, Softli put one up in the top corner to score the team’s second and final goal of the game.

“Jaclyn has been dangerous in every spring match we’ve played and she has a chance to continue that this Friday versus the Sounders who she’ll join when spring ends,” said Gallimore.

“We created several quality opportunities and thwarted their dangerous attempts and I was especially please that we could seal the deal with the second goal late."

Transitioning out of spring matches and into season games, Coach Gallimore looks to improve the team’s defense and overall possession. She considers outside back the most contested position for minutes with Sami Page, Katey Fawcett, Havana McElvaine and Paige Serwold all having potential to earn playing time.

“Each one of these players has their own strengths and at different times have shown why they should earn time, however we still need them to step up and be dangerous and more involved in the attack.”

The Huskies will return from their 2-0 shutout against Western Washington to play in another spring match against the Seattle Sounders Women this Friday, April 25, at 7:00 p.m. The Sounders will host the match in Tukwila, Wash., at the Starfile Sports Complex.
