PORTLAND, Ore. – The Washington Women’s soccer team dropped another close 1-0 match to the seventh ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Friday afternoon at the Nike Portland Invitational and fall to 1-4-0 on the season. Wake Forest netted the only goal of the game late in the 11th minute and held on to that lead for the remainder of the game.

The Demon Deacon goal came on a quick kick from freshman Sarah Teegarden off of a corner from teammate Katie Stengel.

Despite just outshooting Wake Forest 10-9, and 4-3 on goal, the Dawgs were unable to push the ball past keeper Aubrey Bledsoe, who had four saves.

The Huskies pushed hard after the half, and had a lot of close opportunities from three corner kicks, but the struggled and were call offsides four times in the match.

“We played our best game of the season on a lot of fronts,” head coach Lesle Gallimore said, “We knew Wake would be dangerous on restarts and they indeed scored directly off a corner. We created plenty of chances and really had some very good looks on goal that we needed to convert.”

Senior Lindsay Elston led the Husky offensive attack with five shots, three on them on goal. Isabel Farrell added two to the total and Jaclyn Softli, Alie Beahan and Kate Bennett each had one shot.

Redshirt sophomore Megan Kufeld tallied two saves in her full 90:00 in the goal for UW.

“The coaching staff feels very confident that if we build off this performance we’re going to begin getting results, our shots will start to go in.”

The Huskies continue tournament play in Portland on Sunday facing off against Central Michigan at noon PT.
