SAN MARINO -- The Husky women continued their journey through Italy, momentarily exiting the country to enter the independent republic of San Marino. Just 62 square kilometers, San Marino sits on a mountaintop and is the smallest country in Europe.

The Dawgs arrived and after checking into the hotel near the top of the mountain with gorgeous views, set out on a tour led by San Marino-native Laura. She took the team through the capital area, bursting with pride for her nation, which has kept its independence for longer than any republic in the world. The independence of San Marino has been respected since the fourth century and survived the advance of Napoleon, the Italian unification and both World Wars.

The tour included a walk through the downtown with stops at the church, the capital building, the archery stadium and several statues and landmarks. Laura provided the history behind each place giving San Marino a certain charm.

Following the tour, much of the team hiked up to the castles that sit on the very top of the mountain. From the castles there are spectacular views off the nearly shear edges of the cliff. Inside the castles were medieval weapons that the knights used to defend San Marino.

After some time to shop with the low tax rates in San Marino compared to the rest of Italy, the team reconvened in the hotel to for dinner. The usual three-course Italian meal was on tap that included delicious pasta with cream sauce.

Following dinner, the team partook in a Dutch Auction, which involves skits based on ideas from the coaches. The Huskies were split up into four teams and had just two minutes to prepare for each skit after learning what they had to act out. The skits proved to be hilarious with the players poking fun at their teammates and coaches all in good fun.

The Dawgs will stay one more night in San Marino, but have a trip planned to the beach town of Rimini, which is just 30 minutes to the east. After a day at the Adriatic Sea, the Huskies will then continue on their journey with the next stop being Venice.
