HONOLULU, Hawaii – The University of Washington women’s soccer team dropped season opener decision 3-0 to the No. 21 UCF Knights on Friday night. Both teams are competing in the No Ka Oi Tournament hosted by Hawaii.

It was a very physical match-up between the Huskies and the Knights, the final foul total being 33. 21 of those were called against the UW women.

“We went in knowing UCF was a really strong, physical team with a lot of potential up front,” said head coach Lesle Gallimore, “and the game got really physical. The fouls really hurt us. They put us off on a bad foot. We started play a little timidly and then we went down 2-0 and you have to change the way you are playing. We got paralyzed a little bit. Against a team like that, that’s just not going to go your way.”

Isabel Farrell, Lindsay Elston, Kate Bennett, Becca Schoales and Amanda Perez each tallied one shot against the Knights, totaling five for the Huskies. Megan Kufeld manned the goal all 90 minutes and recorded four saves.

The first of UCF’s goals came from junior Tatiana Coleman in only the fifth minute of play. The second came from junior Jennifer Martin on a free kick and the Knights sealed the match with a second goal from Coleman.

Gallimore added, “we just need to have a better effort with the ball against UNC-Greensboro on Sunday. We have a really experienced group and I think they were in their heads too much tonight. It’s in games like these that you really notice the lack of preseason, especially against a team who did have a scrimmage and one that is as good as UCF is. But, it’s early in the season; there are a lot of games a head of us. It was good to get this type of game out of the way early.”

Washington will return to play in the tournament on Sunday, Aug. 25th against UNC-Greensboro. Game time is set for 3:00 pm PST.
