SAN FRANCISCO – As Kasen Williams walked the prison-cell lined corridors of Alcatraz he kept coming back to same thing.
“I never want to be in a place like this,” he thought to himself.
Washington’s standout receiver joined his teammates and BYU, the Huskies’ opponent in Friday’s Fight Hunger Bowl, in a tour of the famous prison Monday afternoon.
“You’re thinking, I’d never want to be here,” Williams said. “That was the first thing I thought, so I’m going to do everything I can do to stay away from trouble.”
The trip out to the island was the first in a series of bowl week events the teams will experience. It was a chance for the players to get away from football for a few hours and visit one of San Francisco’s famous landmarks.
“I’m kind of a history nerd, so it’s pretty cool to see all that,” lineman Ben Riva said. “It was fun.”
While the Huskies and Cougars wandered the prison, it provided an opportunity for several old friends and former teammates to catch up. BYU freshman quarterback Billy Green attended King’s High School with Washington’s Thomas Vincent and Caleb Taylor.
After touring the prison, players enjoyed the view of the San Francisco skyline as the sun set over the city.
“The view of San Francisco is one of the best things I’ve ever seen,” Williams said.
After hearing about the how difficult it would be to swim the 1.5-mile trek from Alcatraz to the mainland, Williams was asked which of his teammates could make the journey.
“Nobody,” he said with a laugh. “Maybe Jeff Lindquist. He just seems like he could do something like that, because he could last that long.”
When Lindquist was asked the same question, he said Psalm Wooching.
“He’s an island guy,” Lindquist said.
After touring the island, the teams boarded a boat back to the city and, while it was a memorable trip, Williams thinks the best moments are “still to come. I think this is a good part of it. This is probably my favorite part so far, but we’ve got more events.”
