MLS Draft Results
PHILADELPHIA – The Portland Timbers selected Husky defender Taylor Peay with the 26th pick the Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Thursday. Peay is coming off a standout season with the Dawgs and now will begin his professional career just down the I-5 corridor.
The Timbers made Peay the seventh pick of the second round. He joins a squad that advanced to the Western Conference Championship last season after finishing the regular season with the conference’s best record.
Peay was a co-captain with the Huskies who won the Pac-12 title and advanced to the Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament. Washington finished 16-2-4, which included the deepest NCAA run in school history. Peay scored six goals for the Huskies, but his main role was as the leader of a defense that allowed just 17 goals all season.
He was a First Team All-Pac-12 selection and became just the third Husky to earn NSCAA First Team All-America honors.
Peay becomes the latest of a long lineage of Husky players in Major League Soccer. The Dawgs have now had 22 players drafted by MLS clubs and Peay should become the 19th player to compete in the United States’ top league.
Peay was one of eight Pac-12 players selected in the two rounds of the MLS Draft (38 picks). The third and fourth rounds of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft will be conducted on Tuesday, January 21.
