SPOKANE, Wash. -- Washington men’s soccer kicks off the 2013 season with a match against Gonzaga. The Huskies will travel to Spokane to play on Friday, August 30th at 5:00pm. The game is streamed on the Gonzaga website, but does require a paid subscription.
Washington is ranked 23rd in the nation entering the season and they are looking to be a national contender this year. With three returning seniors and a fifth-year transfer, experience and leadership will not be an issue for this year’s Husky squad. Among the seniors is Herman Trophy candidate Spencer Richey who should be among the nation’s top goalkeepers all year.
Washington senior defensive back Taylor Peay will give the Huskies the defensive presence in front of Richey, while senior Michael Harris will lead from the midfiel. Sophomore midfielder James Moberg, who had 14 points last year (4 goals and 6 assists) is the top returning scorer, but the offense will be bolstered with several key newcomers. Brad Jacobson is a senior transfer from Dartmouth, while JC transfer Darwin Jones already had a goal and an assisting in the exhibition game. Freshman Cristian Roldan was the national high school player of the year and should make an immediate impact.
The Huskies won three games on the road last year and hope Gonzaga will be their first road victory this season. The Dawgs also opened with Gonzaga last season, winning 2-1 in overtime at the Husky Soccer Stadium. Ian Lange scored the game winner just six minutes into overtime in that contest.
Gonzaga had a disappointing season last year with a 4-15-1 record, but they are looking to bounce back this year. Gonzaga junior midfielder Lars Ludwigs and senior midfielder Nick Hamer have been named to the All-West Coast Conference preseason men’s soccer team.
After Friday’s game Washington will come back to Husky Soccer stadium to face Santa Clara in the home opener. That contest will be Tuesday, September 3, at 7:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live for free on the Pac-12 website, with links from GoHuskies.com.
