TULSA, Okla. – No. 6 Washington missed an opportunity on Thursday at round three of the NCAA Championships at the Tulsa Country Club. Improved conditions gave teams a better chance at scoring, but the Dawgs could not take advantage with round of 13-over 293 to drop back to 15th place.

The Dawgs made nine birdies on the afternoon as winds died down, but several key miscues and some cold putters led to poor scoring. After entering play in a tie for ninth, Washington struggled early on and could never make it up and now are 25 shots off the lead at 41-over 881 for the championship.

After two very windy days, 16 of the 24 teams had their best round of the championship in round three, but the Huskies were not one of them, leading to their tumble down the leaderboard.

No. 3 Duke rose to the lead with a round of 2-under 278, while No. 1 USC was the big mover shooting an identical round to the Blue Devils to move up to second, six shots off the lead. No. 7 Oklahoma who entered the day in the lead struggled and is now third 10 shots back. Four other teams are within 15 shots of the lead as there is plenty to be decided during Friday’s final round.

SooBin Kim continues to be Washington’s top player, although two late bogeys dropped her back into a tie for 20th. Kim finished with a round of 4-over 74, but bogeys on her final two holes dropped her to 7-over for the tournament.

Charlotte Thomas played the Dawgs best round on Thursday, making one birdie and one bogey on the way to an even-par 70. The Husky sophomore bounced back from a tough second round to move up the leaderboard into a tie for 35th at 9-over for the tournament.

After two solid rounds to open the tournament, Jennifer Yang struggled with her opening nine holes on the way to a 5-over 75. Yang made two uncharacteristic double-bogeys on the front, before getting it together for nine pars on the back. Still, the damage had been done as Yang dropped back to a tie for 52nd at 11-over for the tournament.

Ying Luo was the final Husky score used on Thursday, firing a round of 4-over 74. Luo five bogeys and a birdie and is now tied for 84th at 16-over for the championship.

Kelli Bowers could not maintain momentum after an opening birdie and finished with a 7-over 77. She is now tied for 116th at 23-over.

Washington will complete the NCAA Championships on Friday, beginning at 5:55 a.m., PT, off the first tee. The Dawgs still have plenty to play for as the look to move back into the top-10 for just the fourth time in program history.
