MAUI, Hawai’i – No. 10 Washington stayed in contention at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic, firing a round of 2-over 290 for the second straight day. The Dawgs will enter Wednesday’s final round in second place just three strokes back of No. 15 Pepperdine.

“We got off to a much better start than we did yesterday,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “The biggest difference is we did not play the par 5’s as well. We were 9-under yesterday and just 2-under today. On this is a golf course you really need to take advantage of the par 5’s.”

“We are in a position to go get a win, though. We just need to worry about ourselves tomorrow. If we just worry about the things that we can control, we’ll be OK.”

The Dawgs got three strong rounds, but had to keep a round of 5-over 77 to drop them three back of the Waves. Both Washington and Pepperdine are well clear of the rest of the field with third-place UC Davis sitting 14 strokes back of the Huskies.

Grace Na of Pepperdine shot the best round of the tournament so far, a 6-under 66 to move six strokes clear of the individual lead. Sitting in a tie for second is Ying Luo who backed up her opening round 70 with an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Luo played the front nine at 2-under, but made three bogeys on the back before a birdie on the 17th hole got her round back to level par.

Also with big rounds on Tuesday were SooBin Kim and Jennifer Yang. Kim’s second round was bettered only by Na as the Husky junior finished with a round of 2-under 70. She sits in fifth place at even par for the tournament. Yang is one better overall, sitting in fourth place at 1-under. She made four birdies on the way to round of 1-under on Tuesday.

For the final score kept, both Eimi Koga and Kelli Bowers finished with rounds of 5-over 77. Bowers now sits in a tie for 20th at 7-over, one day after making a hole-in-one. Koga is tied for 46th at 12-over.

The Dawgs will complete the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on Wednesday as the fight it out with Pepperdine for the team title. The Dawgs and Waves will tee off on the first four holes with UC Davis and Santa Clara as part of a shotgun start.
