TANAGURA, Japan -- Washington stormed to a first round lead at the Topy Cup, firing a 6-under round of 282. Washington got four rounds under par to build an early 10-stroke lead.
The Dawgs are 10 shots better than Oregon State after round one with Tohoku Fukushi University the top Japanese team, 14 shots off the lead.
Washington was led by Jennifer Yang and Ying Luo who are tied for the overall lead. They were both 2-under par with rounds of 70. Yang was 2-over after 11 holes and then strung together four-straight birdies to get her round on track. Luo was more consistent, finishing both nines 1-under par.
The other two scorers were Charlotte Thomas and SooBin Kim who are each 1-under and tied for fourth overall. Thomas shot a 2-over par 38 on the front, but then opened the back nine with five-straight birdies. Kim backed up her great finish at the LPGA Safeway Classic with another round under par.
Finally, Cyd Okino is tied for 14th after a 3-over round of 75.
The Dawgs will be back out on the course Wednesday in Japan for round two as they attempt to expand their overall lead.
