Topy Cup Home
TANAGURA, Japan -- The Husky women’s golf team open their fall season on Tuesday when they participate in the annual Topy Cup at the Tanagura Country Club. Washington will compete against the Oregon State and four local collegiate Japanese teams.
The Huskies are coming off one of the most successful campaigns in school history, which saw the Dawgs finish second in the Pac-12 tournament, the highest finish of any Washington team. Couple that success with all five lineup members returning and expectations are certainly high for the Huskies. The Dawgs enter the fall season ranked No. 12 in the nation by Golf World.
Junior SooBin Kim, who worked her way up to No. 1 on the team last fall, will be hoping to replicate her success from last season. She finished the year with a school record scoring average of 71.97, seven top-10 finishes, and was awarded first team All-Conference and second team All-American honors.
Joining Kim at the top of the Huskies’ lineup will be sophomore Charlotte Thomas, who is coming off the best freshman season in school history. In the 2012-13 season, she finished with a scoring average of 72.91—third best ever by a Husky—and was named to the All-Pac-12 second team.
Rounding out the Huskies’ expected top five are sophomore Ying Luo and juniors Jennifer Yang and Cyd Okino. Luo turned heads last season by finishing eighth in the NCAA Central Regional and qualifying for the National Championship individually, finishing 50th overall. The three played in all 12 tournaments last season, consistently netting solid results, and will look to bring more tournament experience to the 2013-14 season.
The Huskies will play 54 holes over the next three days, 18 each day. Action is scheduled to begin tomorrow, September 10, at 8:00 a.m., but because of time zone differences will begin Monday at 4:00 p.m. PST.
