HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England - The Washington rowing team opened its Henley Royal Regatta competition with a three-length victory in a Ladies' Challenge Plate quarterfinal race Friday.
The Huskies' second varsity eight beat a crew from Spain in one of four quarterfinal races in the Ladies' Challenge competition and will advance to a semifinal on Saturday. Washington's crew crossed the finish line in six minutes and 28 seconds, three lengths ahead of Real Circulo Labradores de Sevilla and Real Club Mediterráneo de Málaga.
On Saturday, two Husky crews will compete as the Huskies' varsity eight will contend with a boat from Poland (WKS Zawisza & RTW Lotto) in a semifinal for the Grand Challenge Cup, the top event at the annual Henley Royal Regatta, which was first held in 1839. The winner of that race will face an English crew, Leander Club & Molesey Boat Club, on Sunday for the Cup, a trophy that the UW last won in 1977. Washington's Grand Challenge Cup semifinal race gets underway at 3:30 p.m. GMT (7:10 a.m. PDT).
At 12:10 p.m. GMT (4:10 a.m. PDT), the UW will race another crew from the Leander Club & Molesey Boat Club in a Ladies' Challenge Plate semifinal, while Robert Gordon University and Aberdeen Boat Club (Scotland) will face a boat from Northeastern University (USA) in the other semi. You can follow live results via the Regatta's website.
