SEATTLE - In a compilation of all collegiate gymnastics teams, Washington ranked eighth among all teams in 2014 with a cumulative grade point average of 3.52. Utah, the only Pac-12 team ranked higher than the Huskies, led the nation with a 3.78 gpa.
The team's academic recognition should come as no surprise as they had received the NCAA Public Recognition Award in June from association president Mark Emmert. This honor is awarded to teams that had an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.
McKenzie Fechter led all Gym Dawgs with a 3.78 gpa. The communications major was among five Huskies that boasted a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Janae Janik (3.66), Jessica Nesis (3.56), Aliza Vaccher (3.64) and Alexandra Yacalis (3.61) were all recognized for academic excellence by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches.
The Huskies report to fall camp in early September. Captains for the upcoming season include seniors Fechter, Jackie McCartin and Madison Podlucky.
