ATLANTA -- Cheng-Tsung Pan opened the first round of the U.S. Amateur Championship Monday with a 3-under par 68 and is tied for seventh at Atlanta Athletic Club.

Pan was even par after he made the turn on the par-71 Riverside Course, but the All-American had three birdies on the back nine to shoot up the leaderboard.

He was among the first to finish in the morning wave and spent most of the afternoon waiting to find out where he stood among the 312 competitors.  Ultimately, he shared the No. 7 spot with nine other golfers.

Three golfers are tied for the lead at -6.

Pan will move over to the par-72 Highlands Course Tuesday.

The top 64 finishers after two rounds of stroke play move onto match play, which runs through Sunday.
