SEATTLE – The start of the 2014 Husky volleyball season is just a few days away, with practice set to begin this Saturday inside Alaska Airlines Arena. Setting the stage for the season, the Pac-12 announced the results of its coaches poll, as well as the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team, featuring UW’s senior outside hitters Krista Vansant and Kaleigh Nelson.

Washington was voted third in the coaches poll behind Stanford and USC. The defending Pac-12 Champions, the Huskies went 18-2 in league play last year and 30-3 overall en route to their first Final Four appearance since 2006. The Huskies received two of the 12 first-place votes, with the Cardinal and Trojans splitting the remaining ten. Washington was picked third in the preseason poll last year as well, and in four of the past five years now.

After the top three, Arizona State is pegged fourth, California fifth, Oregon sixth, followed by No. 7 Colorado, No. 8 UCLA, No. 9 Arizona, No.10 Utah, No. 11 Washington State, and No. 12 Oregon State. A record nine of the 12 conference teams advanced to the NCAA Championships last season.

Vansant is the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year as well as the AVCA National Player of the Year, so it’s no surprise to find the Redlands, Calif. native on the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team. Nelson was an All-Pac-12 selection last year as well after averaging a career-best 3.05 kills per set. The Salem, Ore. native was named an AVCA Third Team All-American. This is the second year that coaches have voted for an All-Pac-12 preseason squad.

Washington’s first match is just a few weeks down the road on August 29 against Portland State in Boise, Idaho as part of the Northwest Challenge.
