GLASGOW, Scotland - Competing for his hometown fans, Husky sophomore Jax Thoirs just missed medaling in the pole vault today at the Commonwealth Games, placing fourth overall. A native of Glasgow, Thoirs got to make his first Commonwealth appearance in a familiar setting.

The 2014 Pac-12 Champion in the pole vault, Thoirs made a height of 17-10 1/2 today at Hampden Park Stadium, missing three tries at 18-2 1/2. He lost out on the tiebreaker for third-place by virtue of just one miss at 17-10 1/2, as Canada's Shawn Barber was clean over that height and won bronze.

This was the fourth time in 2014 that Thoirs has made at least 17-10 in competition. He set his PR of 18-4 1/2 at the Ken Shannon Invitational back in May. After winning Pac-12s with a make of 18-0 1/2, Thoirs finished 13th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at 17-8 1/2 to earn All-America Second Team honors. He also was a First Team All-American indoors, tying for eighth at the NCAA Indoor meet.

Held every four years since 1930, the Commonwealth Games are international, multi-sport events for athletes from Commonwealth nations.
