SEATTLE - Jenni Nogueras, senior on the 2013 Husky squad, is currently making her debut for the senior Puerto Rican National Team in the Pan American Cup held over the next eight days in Mexico. Nogueras saw action in Puerto Rico's opening match against Argentina on Wednesday.
Spending each of the past three seasons as one of UW's two setters in a 6-2 rotation, the native of Cayey, Puerto Rico finished 10th on the UW career assists list and had a career-best 758 assists last season as the Huskies made the Final Four and won the Pac-12 title. She adds to a growing list of Husky setters to graduate onto national team play, as 2006 grad Courtney Thompson and 2010 grad Jenna Hagglund are both frequent U.S. National Team selections.
The Pan American Cup features 11 nations divided into two pools, with Puerto Rico and the U.S. both in Pool B with Argentina, Colombia, and Costa Rica with matches held in Hidalgo, Mexico. Puerto Rico dropped its first match to Argentina and will play the U.S. on June 13, with Nogueras subbing in during sets two and three.
Pool A has Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, host Mexico, Peru and Trinidad & Tobago. The group will play its matches in Mexico City. The top team each pool advances directly into the semifinals on June 18, while second- and third-place teams meet in crossover quarterfinals on June 17.
