SEATTLE - One of the elite international volleyball tournaments, the Montreux Volley Masters, is set to begin this week and Husky grads Courtney Thompson and Jenna Hagglund will handle the setting duties for Team USA among themselves. The tourney runs from May 27 to June 1 in Montreux, Switzerland.

The 14-woman roster will be led by U.S. National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly. Thompson, the 2006 grad and former Honda Award winner, and Hagglund, a 2010 grad and two-time All-American, are the only two setters on the roster. Thompson is one of three former Olympians on the team along with libero Nicole Davis and middle blocker Christa Harmotto.

The U.S.A. is ranked No. 2 in the world rankings behind Brazil. The Montreux event features seven of the top nine teams in the world. Two pools of four teams compete in a preliminary round-robin format. The U.S. is grouped in Pool B with No. 3 Japan, No. 8 Dominican Republic and No. 9 Germany. Pool A includes No. 1 Brazil, No. 5 China, No. 6 Russia and host Switzerland.

The U.S. Women open the 29th edition of the Montreux Volley Masters against Germany on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., followed by Japan on Wednesday at 9 p.m. The Americans are idle on Thursday before concluding the round-robin pool play on Friday against NORCECA rival Dominican Republic at 9 p.m. All match times are local Swiss time.

The top two teams each preliminary pool advance to the semifinals that begin on May 31, followed by the medal round on June 1.

The U.S. last competed in the Montreux Volley Masters in 2011 as it finished fourth. The Americans earned the silver medal at the 2010 edition behind gold-medalist China. Brazil won the most recent Montreux Volley Masters last year by defeating runner-up Russia.

This will be Hagglund's first USA match play since the FIVB Grand Champions Cup last November, and Thompson's first since the FIVB World Grand Prix preliminary rounds in August.
