SEATTLE – For the first time in 114 years of Huskies baseball history, Washington has been shutout three-straight game, this time by UCLA, 3-0, Friday night at Husky Ballpark. The Bruins (24-29-1, 11-17) snapped a 10-game losing streak and have now beat Washington (38-14-1, 20-8) 18-straight games dating back to 2006.
After being blanked 1-0 and 3-0 last weekend by Oregon State, the eighth-ranked Huskies have went 28 innings without a run and equaled a season-high three-game losing streak. Against UCLA, they have not scored a run in 41-consecutive innings dating back to last season.
Bruins starter James Kaprielian (7-6) tossed the first eight innings before giving way to closer Derek Berg. Kaprielian, the Pac-12 leader with 108 strikeouts, had 11 tonight. He walked two batters and gave up just four hits in silencing the Huskies’ bats.
Kaprielian got all the support he would need in the first inning when the Bruins jumped on Huskies’ starter Jared Fisher for two runs.
Trent Chatterton got things going with a double just out of reach of right fielder Brian Wolfe and after a groundout, Shane Zeile walked to put runners on the corners. Justin Hazard followed with a two-out drive into the gap that centerfielder Jack Meggs dove for, but the ball bounced out of his glove and away from him for a two-run triple.
The Bruins cushioned their lead in the sixth on a two-out single by Ty Moore that scored Aaron Weimer to make it 3-0.
The Huskies managed only four hits on the night, two of them coming from the bat of Wolfe.
With the Huskies’ loss, Oregon State clinched the Pac-12 title. Washington is assured of no worse than a tie for second with Arizona State, who the Huskies hold the tie-breaker against after beating them in two-out-of-three games to start the Pac-12 season.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday with first pitch at 7:00 p.m. The Huskies send 10-game winner Tyler Davis (10-2, 1.71) to the hill against UCLA left-hander Grant Watson (4-9, 3.90).
