BERKELEY, Calif. – Four Huskies turned in multi-hit games, and Kaitlin Inglesby and Bryana Walker combined for seven strong innings, as the Huskies defeated Cal, 4-3, in the first game of a three-game series Thursday at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley, Calif.
Whitney Jones, Marki Creger-Zier, Hooch Fagaly, and Victoria Hayward each got at least two hits for the Huskies (31-13, 11-9 Pac-12). Inglesby held the Bears (23-27, 4-16 Pac-12) to two runs in five innings in the start to pick up her 12th win of the season, and Walker shut the door over the final two innings to earn her 2nd save of the season.
The Bears got to Inglesby for two runs in the bottom of the 1st, taking an early 2-0 lead.
But the Huskies answered right back in the top of the 2nd, getting a run on a two-out RBI single from Creger-Zier. After Ali Aguilar led off the inning with a single, Jones followed with her team-leading 12th double of the season. Then, Creger-Zier delivered the clutch two-out base hit.
The Huskies took the lead for good in the top of the 3rd. After walks to Inglesby and Aguilar, Jones drove home both with a 2-run single, giving the Huskies the 3-2 lead.
Jones also came up with big defensive plays from her post in left field.
Cal catcher Victoria Jones led off the bottom of the 4th inning by lining a pitch off the top of the left field fence. Jones hauled the ball in quickly and made a strong throw to Kelli Suguro at 2nd base in time to cut down Jones for the first out of the inning.
After allowing the initial two runs in the 1st Inglesby silenced the Bears over her final four innings of work.
The Huskies added a run in the top of the 6th on an RBI-single off the bat of Fagaly, scoring Creger-Zier from 2nd base and taking a 4-2 lead.
Cal threatened in the bottom of the 6th, scoring a run to cut the Huskies lead to one at 4-3. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, Cal 2nd baseman Kylie Reed drove a fly ball down the left field line. Jones made the catch and threw a strike to home plate, cutting down the tying run at the plate and securing the Huskies 4-3 victory.
Walker struck out three in her two innings, including the first two outs of the bottom of the 7th.
Jones reached base safely four times, going 3-for-3, with a double, two RBI and one walk. Creger-Zier went 2-for-3, with one run scored, one RBI, and one stolen base.
The Huskies are back to play the Bears on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in a game broadcast. live on the Pac-12 Networks.
