UW HOSTS NCAA WEST REGIONAL
The Huskies will host this year’s NCAA West Regional at Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort. Washington enters the tournament as the fourth seed, needing to finish in the top eight to earn their spot at the NCAA Championships. The tournament is a three-day, 54-hole stroke play championship. In addition to the No. 11 Huskies, No. 1 USC, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 13 Clemson, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 19 Northwestern and No. 23 Michigan State will be ranked teams in the field. The rest of the field includes Iowa State, GRU Augusta, Oregon, Texas A&M, UC Davis, Denver, San Diego State, Wisconsin, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Chattanooga, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Portland State and Detroit.
Mary Lou Mulflur will send a talented and experienced group to Suncadia to play in the NCAA West Regional Championships. It will be the same lineup that placed sixth at the Pac-12 Championships two weeks ago. Four of the Husky players are ranked in the top-60 in the golfstat.com rankings, including Jennifer Yang and SooBin who are currently 21st and 26th. Yang has been the Dawgs most consistent player, finishing as the Huskies top finisher in four-straight tournaments until the last two weeks when Kim won the PING/ASU Invitational and then led the Huskies with a 13th-place finish at Pac-12’s. Also with national rankings are Charlotte Thomas and Ying Luo. Thomas is currently ranked 35th and is third on the team with a 72.8 scoring average. Luo is ranked 63rd and three top-10 finishes for the Huskies this season. Kelli Bowers will be the fifth player in the lineup. She is coming off a T-25th-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships.
UW IN 2013-14
Washington has been consistently in contention this season, including two tournament victories. The Dawgs opened the fall season with a historic 50-stroke victory at the Topy Cup in Japan, but then did not win again until mid-April with an impressive 13-stroke win at the Silverado Invitational against a field that included top-ranked USC. Overall, the Dawgs have seven top-three finishes and have rarely played their ultimal lineup, instead using each week to test different players. Two weeks ago, the Dawgs finished sixth at the Pac-12 Championships playing the same lineup they will use this week. Individually, Thomas opened the season with a win at the Topy Cup in Japan, while Kim won her last time out at the Silverado Invitational. In addition to the wins, Kim has a runner-up, Yang has a pair of third-place finishes and Luo also has a third.
Tumble Creek at Suncadia Resort will host this year’s West Regional. The course will play as a 6,252-yard par 72 for the tournament.
