OJAI, Calif. – The University of Washington women’s tennis team’s run at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships came to an end on Friday in the quarterfinals of both the singles and doubles brackets. The Dawgs, ranked 39th nationally (13-9, 3-7 Pac-12), will now wait to hear if they are selected for the 2014 NCAA Championships next week, which would mark their first NCAA appearance since 2010-11.
Competing in the singles invitational bracket and fresh off an upset over the six-seed, junior Riko Shimizu faced off against five seed Klara Fabikova of California in the quarterfinals before falling 6-2, 6-4 ending her outstanding run in the tournament.
Friday marked the first day of doubles competition in Ojai and UW’s number one duo of Elianne Douglas-Miron and Shimizu had a tough battle as they took on top-seed Kristie Ahn and Carol Zhao of Stanford, who went on to post an 8-3 win over the Dawgs’ top pair. Also competing in the round of 16 championship bracket was Natali Coronel and Grace Ysidora who fell 8-6 to UCLA’s Chanelle Van Nguyen and Courtney Dolehide.
In the doubles invitational bracket, Natalie Allen and Julija Lukac advanced out of the round of 16 with an 8-7 (4) tiebreak win over ASU’s Gussie O’Sullivan and Stephanie Vlad before falling to fourth-seeded Caroline Doyle and Amelia Herring out of Stanford, 8-1 in the quarterfinals.
The NCAA bracket will be announced next week.
