BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington dropped just its second road game of the season, 7-1, in the final game of a three-game series against California Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Huskies will still return home triumphant after winning Thursday and Friday against the Bears to take their sixth Conference series in six attempts.
California (16-19, 5-10) outhit Washington, ranked sixth in College Baseball News and seventh by Baseball America, 11-6 and tagged Husky starter Jeff Brigham (4-2) with his second-consecutive loss.
The Huskies (27-8-1, 14-4) were going for their first sweep at Cal since 2002, but will instead have to settle for their first series win in Berkeley since 2006 and wins in 25 of their last 30 games overall.
Cal took its first lead of the series in the second inning with three runs off Brigham. Brian Celsi had a two-run single and Mitchell Kranson added a run scoring single to give Cal the 3-0 advantage that they would never relinquish.
The Bears added two more runs in the fifth to chase Brigham from the game. Derek Campbell delivered the big blow, a two-run double.
Brigham gave up season highs in hits (8) and earned runs (5), and lasted a season-low 4 1/3 innings while also allowing two walks and not recording a strikeout.
Washington, who is 11-2 on the road, scored itslone run against winning pitcher Ryan Mason (3-0) in the sixth, but it would be one of only two offensive threats the Huskies could muster all day.
The Huskies managed to put only three runners in scoring position all day.
Cal added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings off the Huskies’ bullpen.
Bishop was the only Husky batter that managed multiple hits in the game going 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Huskies return to action Tuesday against Seattle U at Bellevue’s Bannerwood Park. The 6 p.m. game was originally scheduled to be played at Husky Ballpark, but the Huskies will now host Seattle U at home on May 13.
