SEATTLE – The full No. 5 Washington Women’s Rowing squad will be back on the home waters of the Montlake Cut this weekend to take on the No. 12 cross-state rivals of Washington State. Races are scheduled to begin Sat. April 12 at 9 a.m. PT.

The dual between the two teams will feature four races over the course of the morning.

“It is a really important, traditional race for us to have a dual meet with Washington State,” head coach Bob Ernst said. “They have a good solid program and they are in the NCAAs almost every year.”

The Huskies are coming off of a great weekend that kicked off the competitive spring schedule. While the top boats made the trip down to San Diego, the majority of the women stayed back in Seattle to take on crews from Western Washington and Seattle U.

In San Diego the women advanced all three of their boats to the grand finals on Sunday. The varsity 8+ and the 2V8+ both would come in second close behind other top-five-ranked teams and the Novice 8+ would win the Laurel V. Korholz trophy in 7:04.59.

Back in Seattle, the UW saw a near perfect performance, dropping only one race – the V8+ competition where the 4V Husky boat was just barely beat out by the top boats from WWU and SU.

The Cougars were down in San Diego last weekend, taking on the Crew Classic, also. The four WSU boats all advanced to Sunday’s grand finals with the Husky boats, but would not fair as well. Their V8+ took home third behind UW, their 2V8+ and V4+ both would finish fourth and their novice 8+ came across the finish in sixth-place.

“We had some tinkering to do this week, after San Diego. We have to be careful, though, because it was a short week for us, since we raced on Sunday. But WSU was in San Diego, too, so it will be just as hard for them. They have some great rowers in their top boat and this weekend is going to be a really meaningful one for both teams,” Ernst finished.
