EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Washington women’s tennis team earned its first Pac-12 win of the season Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Oregon in Eugene. The Dawgs move to 11-8 on the season and 1-7 in league action with just two regular season matches remaining.

"I was really pleased with how well the team played today," said head coach Jill Hultquist. "After our loss on Friday, we met as a team and really talked about what we needed to do to turn things around and the team realized that they needed to fight harder and play the points better. We’ve been playing with a lot of unforced errors in our games so they knew that they had to pick up their game and I definitely thought they did that today."

Doubles action came down to the third match after each team split the first two. Oregon claimed an 8-3 decision at number three doubles over Andjela Nemcevic and Julija Lukac but Grace Ysidora and Natali Coronel evened it up with an 8-4 win on court two leaving court one as the deciding match.

Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu, facing Nicole Long and Sofia Hager, held on to win 8-7 with a 10-8 advantage in the tiebreaker, giving UW a 1-0 lead.

"It was an intense ending for the doubles point and I thought Elianne and Riko really played tough and pulled it together and came out with the win," said Hultquist.

Despite the Ducks tying up the score after the first singles match, the Huskies went on to overpower Oregon with three straight-set wins on courts six, five and three. Riko Shimizu defeated Lina Akesson, 6-2, 6-4 at six singles followed by Natali Coronel’s 6-3, 6-3 victory on court five over Allie Hueffner. Julija Lukac clinched the win for UW on court three with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sofia Hager.

"We usually have been able to count on being able to get wins on courts three through six this season and definitely today, Riko and Natali were able to do that for us," added Hultquist. "Then Julija of course clinched the match again for us today which she has done numerous times for us this season."

Up next, the Huskies return home for their two remaining regular-season contests as they’ll face Colorado on April 12 (11 a.m.) and Utah on April 13 (Noon).
