SEATTLE – The University of Washington men’s tennis team picked up their first Pac-12 win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Arizona, Friday afternoon out at the Bill Quillian Tennis Courts. The Dawgs are now 10-9 on the season and 1-2 in Pac-12 play and will host Utah on Sunday, April 6 at 11 a.m.

“We’ve had some really good matches with Arizona and we’ve been fortunate that things have been going our way results wise when we play them,” said head coach Matt Anger. “This one wasn’t necessarily how I would have predicted it. Their guy at number one singles, Kieren Thompson, battles hard and I was very pleased with the way that Emmett has continued to get better and win 6-1, 6-2. Our depth was once again good for us, getting wins on five and six with Viktor and Michael. Viktor served a heck of a game to finish it off for us,”

UW easily cruised through doubles play en route to winning the point as Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke defeated Sumeet Shinde and Naoki Takeda 8-2 on court one. Viktor Farkas and Max Manthou followed that up with an 8-2 victory at number two doubles. Michael Chamerski and Wendell Watanabe were up 6-3 on court three before play was stopped after UW had already claimed the point.

“We came out really well in doubles,” added Anger. “Hopefully we’ve turned a corner with our doubles and continue to come out strong on each court. “

Arizona evened the score up at one all after Mario Urquidi defeated Jeff Hawke on court four, 6-2, 6-4, but the Huskies responded with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court six by Michael Chamerski and a 6-1, 6-2 Emmett Egger win on court one. After the Wildcats picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court two over Max Manthou, to put the Dawgs up 3-2, the match came down to courts three and five.

Both Viktor Farkas (five) and Gal Hakak (three) won their first set, 7-6, and 6-3, respectively. Hakak dropped his second set 6-7 and was about to start set three when Farkas won 6-3 thanks to impressive serving, ending the match to give UW the win.

Up next, the Dawgs host Utah on Sunday at 11 a.m. The match will be played at the Bill Quillian Tennis Courts, weather permitting.
