SEATTLE – No. 19 Washington is off to a bit of a slow start at The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford. The Dawgs finished the first round at 6-over par to tie for ninth, 18 strokes back of the leader and tournament host, the No. 7 Cardinal.

The Dawgs struggled out of the gate, dropping near the bottom of the leaderboard over the first nine holes. Washington would begin to play better over their final nine, climbing to a tie for ninth, but still well back of the lead. The Cardinal lead at 12-under, three strokes better than St. Mary’s and five strokes better than Oregon. In all, six teams are under par, while the Dawgs are in a four-way tie in ninth place.

The Dawgs were led by Cheng-Tsung Pan, who himself got off to a slow start, before playing his final nine holes at 3-under. Pan finished the day at 2-under 68 in a tie for 11th, five strokes off the lead of Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers. The Husky junior made a big eagle on the seventh hole (his 16th) to get back in red figures.

The Dawgs had two players finish at 2-over 72, sophomores Jonathan Sanders and Chris Babcock. Sanders, who was coming off a win at Bandon Dunes, made three birdies and three bogeys, but had a costly double on the par-5 first hole. Babcock had an up and down round that included four birdies and six bogeys. Each is tied for 49th after the first round.

Washington’s final two players, Trevor Simsby and Corey Pereira finished with rounds of 4-over 74. Simbsy had two costly ‘others’ that ruined an otherwise solid round, while Pereira got off to a bad start, before playing his final nine holes at 1-under par.

The Dawgs will look for a better start with Saturday’s second round as they attempt to climb the leaderboard. The Dawgs will have the first group of tee times off the 10th hole beginning at 8:00 a.m.
