SEATTLE  –  Washington overcame nasty weather Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark to beat cross-state rivals Gonzaga 7-1 and increase its win streak to seven-straight games. The Huskies improved to 14-1 over their last 15 games.

Rain came down steadily throughout the game and even caused a 20 minute delay in the top of the fourth inning, but the weather could not cool down the hot Husky bats.

Washington (17-5-1, 5-1 Pac-12), ranked 19th in the latest poll by College Baseball News, outhit Gonzaga (9-14) 9-3. Braden Bishop, Branden Berry and Trevor Mitsui had two hits apiece to pace the Huskies.

The Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning, thanks to a Gonzaga error that led to all four runs being unearned. Erik Forgione led off and was safe at first after shortstop Mitch Gunsolus’ throw pulled first baseman Taylor Jones off the bag. Bishop and Andrew Ely followed with bunts down the third-base line that went for hits and loaded the bases.

Robert Pehl and Berry each hit sacrifice flies that scored Forgione and Bishop, respectively, to make it 2-0. After a Mitsui single put runners on the corners, reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week Brian Wolfe hit a ball that got caught in the wind blowing out to left field for a run-scoring double.

Starting pitcher Will Abram (1-2) uncorked a wild pitch that scored Mitsui to cap the scoring.

The Huskies made the score 6-0 with two more runs in the sixth inning. After a wild pitch scored Wolfe, Forgione hit a single that scored Josh Cushing.

Gonzaga got on the board in the eighth on an RBI double by Beau Bozett that snapped UW pitcher’s scoreless-inning streak at 18, but the Huskies answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Berry hit a RBI single that scored Bishop from third to make the score 7-1.

Five pitchers saw action for both teams. Trevor Dunlap (2-1), who came into the game in the fifth inning, threw three hitless innings to pick up the victory.

Washington hits the road this weekend to resume Pac-12 action taking on USC in three games, March 28-30.
