SEATTLE – The University of Washington women’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the second-ranked UCLA Bruins on Friday afternoon. The Dawgs, currently ranked No. 42, move to 10-7 on the season and 0-5 in Pac-12 play. UW next faces No. 12 USC on Sunday, March 23 at Noon.

“Overall, I was happy with how they performed today,” said head coach Jill Hultquist. “Last weekend’s scores weren’t that competitive so I was happy to see the girls really come out and compete hard against a very talented team. I love the fact that our number three doubles pulled out a win. That was the first win Andjela Nemcevic has had over a UCLA team so that was a little victory for us and something we can use going forward.”

The Huskies doubles teams had to face two of the top 10 teams in the country in top-ranked Jennifer Brady and Robin Anderson on court one and sixth-ranked Kyle McPhillips and Catherine Harrison on court two but did come out with a victory on court three. Andjela Nemcevic and Julija Lukac pulled out an 8-7 (7-4) win over Courtney Dolehide and Chanelle Van Nguyen to move their season record to 7-6.

In singles play, the Bruins clinched the overall win with victories on courts three, five and four but the Huskies saw positive play out of the top of its lineup as No. 97 Douglas-Miron battled the fourth-ranked player in the country before falling 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). It was the second-straight top-10 player the sophomore has faced in the last week.

“I was really proud of how Elianne played,” said Hultquist. “Considering a week ago she lost 6-0, 6-0 to the number two player in the country, it was really promising to see her bounce back like that. I’ve always said our team is full of fighters and that’s what Elianne did today. I think she has a lot of untapped potential and I think she’s finally beginning to see it.”

On court two, Grace Ysidora took No. 16 Jennifer Brady to three sets before falling 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Additionally, Riko Shimizu won her first set 6-0 on court six, but fell, 6-4 (10-6) after the tiebreak.

Up next the Huskies face No. 12 USC on Sunday, March 23 at Noon. The match will most likely take place outside at the Bill Quillian Tennis Courts, weather permitting. If not, it will be played in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
