SEATTLE – This Sunday at 2:00 p.m. PT, the No. 23 Washington Huskies will take on the ninth-ranked UCLA Bruins at Alaska Airlines Arena for a live Pac-12 Network broadcast. The Bruins are the highest ranked team the GymDawgs have faced so far this year, and it could not be timed any better.
“I’m so proud of how hard our girls have worked this week after the success we had last weekend against Stanford. They didn’t get complacent. We are finally starting to build momentum and we are really excited to capitalize on that at another home meet this weekend, especially against a team as good as UCLA,” head coach Joanne Bowers said.
UW is coming off of a season high 196.2 score against the now No. 10 Stanford Cardinal, which was the first time the team had broken the 196 mark this season. Only finishing .625 behind the visiting Cardinal last week has put the Huskies in an excellent spot going into this weekend.
To build on its success from last weekend, Washington will look to its three all-arounders who all tallied totals over 39; senior Aliza Vaccher, sophomore Allison Northey and freshman Janae Janik. All three will be back on every event this weekend providing stability for the outstanding group of specialists that will be rounding out the line-ups.
“We really have been focusing on all of the details this week,” Bowers said. “There are always little things you can improve on, and this group gets that. At this point we are all about the detail work, so I really feel like we are going to peak at the right time.”
The Bruins are coming off of a 196.925-194.950 win over Arizona State, which marked their season-high team total. Their win also saw a perfect 10 from junior Samantha Peszek on the uneven bars.
While UCLA is ahead in the series versus UW all-time, including two wins against the Huskies last year, the story in Seattle is different. The last time the Bruins visited Alaska Airlines Arena the GymDawgs came out with the ‘W’ 195.350-194.600 in 2012.
This is Alumni weekend for the GymDawgs, so be sure to look out for your favorite alumni at the meet. It is also the annual blackout meet. For more information on tickets, visit gohuskies.com/tickets or call the ticket office at (206) 543-2200.
