SEATTLE - University of Washington Director of Athletics Scott Woodward announced the hiring of Lance Lopes as Senior Associate Athletic Director Tuesday. Lopes joins the Huskies after serving as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for the Seattle Seahawks, Sounders FC and CenturyLink Field.

Lopes brings a wealth of executive sports administration experience to Montlake, having guided facets of the internal, external and legal affairs efforts throughout his tenures with the Seahawks and Sounders as well as with the Green Bay Packers. At UW, Lopes will have oversight of marketing and communications efforts, as well as multimedia rights. He will also hold sport oversight of several Husky sports teams and will join fellow Senior Associate Athletic Directors Jen Cohen, Shondell Reed, Stephanie Rempe and Robert Sasaki as a member of Woodward’s executive staff.

“I am excited to welcome Lance to the Husky family,” Woodward said. “To add an executive of Lance’s caliber to our leadership team will provide a distinct edge in navigating the ever-changing landscape of external affairs in college athletics.”

In addition to his duties as general counsel with the Seahawks, Lopes handled special projects for the team, including playing a primary role in identifying and hiring the Seahawks current head coach and general manager. Lopes also spent time leading Corporate Partnerships and administering the business affairs of CenturyLink Field and oversaw the construction of the club’s Virginia Mason Athletic Center headquarters.

“I am grateful to the Seahawks organization for the opportunities and experiences they have provided me over the past 13 years,” Lopes said. “I am excited to change course and to embrace the new challenge of college athletics, particularly with such a great university and athletic department staff.”

Prior to the Seahawks, Lopes served seven years with the Green Bay Packers from 1993-2000 where his duties primarily involved salary cap administration and player contract negotiations. In 2000, he left the Packers to serve on the original management team of StubHub.

A graduate from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1989, he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Linfield College in 1985 where he played tight end on the 1982 and 1984 NAIA national championships football teams. Lopes was born and raised in Winnemucca, Nevada. He is married to Susie Ridder Lopes and they have six children.
