LAS VEGAS – Behind a three-run home run from junior Kylee Lahners and a complete-game shutout from senior Kaitlin Inglesby, the Huskies earned their second win of the day on Friday afternoon, defeating the University of San Diego Toreros, 3-0.

The No. 3 Huskies had knocked off No. 18 Baylor (1-1), 7-4, earlier in the day at the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas.

“It was good for us today to come out strong against a great team in Baylor and find a way to beat a good pitcher,” head coach Heather Tarr said. “Our defense was pretty solid overall. This afternoon’s game against USD, we faced a great pitcher, and we had to find a way to make some adjustments. Kylee came up with a big hit with runners on. We played great defense behind Kaitlin.”

The Huskies (2-0) plated their first runs of the game when Lahners connected for a three-run home in the bottom of the 4th inning, scoring Marki Creger-Zier and Hooch Fagaly. It was the second three-run home run of the day for Lahners, who finished with seven RBI between the two games.

“It felt good to get back out on the field with the team in a game situation,” Lahners said. “We’ve been scrimmaging all fall, but to actually be together on the same team and competing against another opponent is a good feeling.”

Lahners’ three-run home run would be all Inglesby and the Huskies needed to stave off the Toreros (0-2). Inglesby made her first start of the season and pitched 7.0 shutout innings, facing just five batters over the minimum. It was the 16th complete-game shutout of Inglesby’s career.

“I felt good,” Inglesby said. I was facing hitters I had never faced before. They challenged me, and that was good.”

Three freshmen made their collegiate debuts for the Huskies on Friday.  Ali Aguilar and Kimberlee Myers pinch-hit in the first game against Baylor, while Rylleigh Zbaraschuk pinch-ran against the Bears. Aguilar made her first collegiate start against San Diego, starting at shortstop.

The Huskies are back in action tomorrow with two games in the UNLV SportCo Kick-Off Classic. First the Huskies, will face the Arkansas Razorbacks at 1:30 p.m., followed by a matchup with the UNLV Rebels at 6:00 p.m.
