SAN FRANCISCO – For Washington’s seniors, reality is starting to set in. As the Huskies began their final week of practices for Friday’s Fight Hunger Bowl at AT&T Park, the players preparing for their last game in purple and gold are investing all of their energy on one thing: Winning the game.

“Our sole focus is to win the game,” safety Sean Parker said. “I’m trying to have fun but, then again, I’m trying to give it all for my last game and my teammates.”

Washington practiced at City College of San Francisco Monday, kicking off a week of work mixed with play in the Bay Area.

While the goal is centered on winning the game, the Huskies are making sure they enjoy the process as the days dwindle before the season’s final contest.

“The most important thing is just having fun, going out there and playing the game,” receiver Kevin Smith said. “You never know what’s going to happen so, at the end of the day, you just have to have fun.”

Smith said he has spent portions of the trip reminiscing with teammates and trainers, looking back on college career that went by in a blink.

“Then end is coming, but we’ve just got to seize this opportunity and make this a memory,” Smith said.

Like Smith, Parker has been looking back, but the senior is trying to keep his emotions in check until after the game

“When the game’s over, that’s when all my emotion will come out, because then it’s officially over for me,” Parker said. “I wish I could play every day. But my time is up. I’m a senior, four good years, a strong education and great football. I’m just happy to be a part of the University of Washington.”

When asked to assess the Huskies’ performance on the first day of practice in San Francisco, both Smith said it was a chance to “get everything in order. It was good.”

“We’re going to lock in,” Parker said. “Everybody knows our sole purpose. We’ve just got to engrain it in everyone’s mind.”
