SEATTLE - Husky junior defensive end Hau'oli Kikaha was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 football team on Wednesday. He is the first Husky named to the District 8 academic team since Kyle Benn in 2001 and the first defensive player since Nigel Burton in 1998.

Kikaha, from Laie, Hawai'i, leads the team with 6.0 sacks and 8.0 tackles for loss. He is tied for fifth on the team with 39 total tackles (21 solo stops), both stats which leads all UW defensive linemen.

He holds a 3.49 grade point average and is majoring in American Ethnic Studies at Washington. Kikaha was one of eight football student-athletes that traveled to Tahiti as part of their anthropology class this past summer, and also teamed with John Timu last spring as featured presenters at UW’s annual Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Student-athletes must hold at least a 3.3 grade point average, be a starter or important reserve on their team, have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's games and be enrolled at their university for at least one year to be eligible for Academic All-American consideration.

Kikaha will now move onto the national Capital One Academic All-America® ballot; these national awards (First Team, Second Team, Third Team for each sport category) is voted upon by Academic All-America® Committee members and current CoSIDA Board of Directors.
