NANEA, Hawai’i – No. 4 Washington had a day to remember, playing 36 holes of spectacular golf at one of the most beautiful locations on the planet, taking the lead at the Pac-12 Preview through two rounds. The Dawgs fired rounds of 10-under 282 and 6-under 286 to take a two-stroke lead over top-ranked UCLA.

“It was a great day, this morning especially,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It is not often that you can throw out an under par round. This is how we played in Japan and it was good to see.”

The Dawgs two-round total of 16-under is two better than UCLA and four better than USC, the top two ranked teams in the country. Monday also included a hole-in-one for Charlotte Thomas and round of 6-under 67 for SooBin Kim who sits in second place as an individual.

“We wanted to start out aggressive,” said Mulflur. “There was no wind in the morning so we wanted to go after birdies. When you jump out like that it does a lot for the team’s confidence.”

Kim opened with a 1-under 71, but then followed that up with her 67 that included birdies on the final four holes. Kim is 7-under for the tournament and four strokes off the lead set by Bronte Law of UCLA.

“SooBin really caught fire,” said Mulflur. “She has been on the verge of a round like this, but finally broke out today.”

Thomas aced the 17th at Nanea to help her to an eagle, birdie finsish and a 1-over 74 in the afternoon. She was much better in the morning with a round of 4-under 69. Thomas is tied for 10th overall at 3-under for the tournament.

Jennifer Yang is also in the top-10, tied for sixth at 4-under for the tournament. Yang was steady as can be on Monday, carding back-to-back rounds of 2-under 71. She made nine birdies on the day, including 6-under on the par 5’s.

Just outside of the top-10 is Kelli Bowers, who opened with a round of 3-under 70, before shooting 1-over 74 in the afternoon. Bowers is tied for 13th at 2-under for the tournament.

Finallly, Cyd Okino is tied for 34th at 4-over for the tournament. The Husky junior had rounds of 1-under 72 and 5-over 78. Okino actually played three good nines, but struggled on the front nine of round two to skew her score.

The Dawgs will complete the Pac-12 Preview on Tuesday with the final round from the Nanea Golf Club. Washington has a chance to win its second tournament of the year, following up their win at the Topy Cup in Japan back in September.
