TANAGURA, Japan -- Washington men’s golf opened the season in Japan at the Topy Cup with a round of 8-under 272. The Dawgs sit in second place just three strokes back of Japan’s Tohoku Fukushi University.

The Huskies had all five players shoot par or better and are placed in the top-15 ties individually. Freshmen Kevin Kwon had a great start to his Husky career, firing a round of 3-under 67. The British Columbia native was even par over the opening nine and then made an eagle and a birdie with no bogeys to get to his 67 and tied for fifth. Kwon is two shots off the lead of Sam Love of UAB, who is 5-under.

Tied for eighth are Trevor Simsby and another freshman Corey Pereira, who each shot a round of 2-under 68. Simsby was over par on the front nine, but shot 32 on the back, including three-straight birdies. Pereira opened his UW career with a solid 68, which included a 2-under 33 on the front and an even-par back nine.

Rounding out the team scoring for Washington was Jonathan Sanders who shot 1-under 69. Sanders is tied for 12th after closing with a bogey-free 33 on the back nine.

Finally, the Dawgs top-ranked amateur Cheng Tsung-Pan finished with a round of 70. Pan is tied for 15th and after round two birdies and two bogeys.

Washington trails Tohuku Fukushi by three shots and is two shots clear of UAB, who is in third place in the team competition.
