NEW YORK -- Washington is ranked fifth in Golf World Magazine/Nike's pre-season coaches poll that was released on Wednesday. The Huskies are second among four Pac-12 teams in this year's poll.

Defending national champion Alabama received 10 first-place votes and starts the year ranked No. 1, followed by California, Texas and Georgia Tech. UCLA is right behind the Huskies at six, followed by Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Stanford and New Mexico round out the top-10.

Matt Thurmond's Huskies lose major contributors Chris Williams and Charlie Hughes, but there is plenty of talent on the roster to remain one of the nation's best teams. Leading the way will be junior Cheng-Tsung Pan, who spent most of the summer as the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world. He is No. 5 on Golf World's list of top-50 college players to watch.

Senior Trevor Simsby is the same list and gives Washington a nice one-two punch at the top of the lineup.

Jonathan Sanders returns for his sophomore season after breaking out during the spring as a freshman.

Thurmond will also lean heavily on a pair of incoming freshmen to shore up the roster. Kevin Kwon and Corey Pereira are coming off excellent summers that saw them each win several local tournaments by comfortable margins.

The Huskies start their fall season on Sept. 10 at the Topy Cup in Tangura, Japan.
