Hughes Tops Among Five Huskies At U.S. Amateur

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Charlie Hughes shot 1-over 71 at Charles River Country Club and is tied for 37th -- tops among five Huskies competing -- after the first round of the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship.

Hughes shot 1-under 34 on the front nine before finishing with a 2-over 37 on the back. He carded four birdies during his round.

Golfers began play at both Charles River CC and The Country Club on Monday with the top 64 golfers advancing to match play after Tuesday's second round of stroke play. 

Senior Trevor Simsby was the only other Husky competing on the Charles River course and he shot 7-over 77 and is tied for 205th

Three Huskies played The Country Club on Monday, led by current No. 1 ranked R&A amateur golfer Cheng-Tsung Pan. The Husky senior finished 2-over on the day and is tied for 58th.

Senior Gerrit Chambers and sophomore Jonathan Sanders both shot 6-over 76 and are tied for 179th.

The golfers will switch courses on Tuesday. Match play runs Wednesday through Sunday.
