Sew Nice: Husky Stadium’s “Cryogenic” New FieldTurf
Installers of the innovative field at Husky Stadium got crafty. Starting the first week of June 10 workers spent 30 tedious days rolling out pieces of the vibrant new FieldTurf Revolution 1F, then sewing those pieces together by hand to form a 90,009-square-foot, green, purple, gold and white tapestry that will last for years.
The purple end zones have “WASHINGTON” sewn into – not painted on, as with the previous field – to the east and “HUSKIES” into the west. The end-zone markings are in UW’s familiar gold, branded lettering outlined in white. The iconic purple W at midfield outlined in gold is also woven into the field, as are the purple-themed Pac-12 Conference logos at each 25-yard line near each sideline.
FieldTurf Revolution 1F (“F” for football) is reputed to be the most up-to-date turf in the industry. The fibers of the almost-real grass are on top of 280 tons of sand fill and 137 tons of recycled, cryogenic rubber.
Yes, the base of Husky Stadium’s field is cryogenic.
