Klaipeda, Lithuania -- Washington freshman Kelsey Plum will begin her first season in Seattle having already won a gold medal for Team USA. Sunday, Plum and her American teammates defeated France, 61-28, to win the U-19 World Championships.
Plum scored two points and added a rebound off the bench as Team USA dominated France from the beginning. The French had been the only team to give the Americans a good game in the qualifying round, but Sunday the United States was not tested.
Plum was coming off a strong semifinal game where she scored six points, draining a couple of 3-pointers in a win over Australia. In the quarterfinals, the U.S. defeated Japan with Plum scoring her tournament best of 11 points.
Overall, Plum scored 45 points in the tournament, helping the United States to a perfect 9-0 record. She will now enroll in the second session of summer school and join her teammates at UW. New NCAA rules allow limited practice time for the Huskies enrolled in summer school.
