Tom Williams

Outside Linebackers

Tom Williams is in his third season as an assistant coach at Washington, coaching the Husky linebackers. He joined the Washington staff in 2000 after working at Hawaii for three seasons on Fred vonAppen's staff.

Williams was the linebackers coach at Hawaii in 1996 and 1997, taking on the added responsibilities as the team's defensive coordinator for the 1998 campaign. At just 29 years of age, Williams was one of the youngest coordinators among the Division I-A coaching ranks in 1998.

Williams is no stranger to Pac-10 football. He was a four-time letterman at inside linebacker for Stanford from 1989-92. Williams started in 20 of his 35 games at Stanford, including 15 times during his junior and senior seasons. As a senior captain he helped the Cardinal to a 10-3 record that included a 6-2 league record and a share of the Pac-10 Championship with Washington. That Bill Walsh-coached team defeated Penn State in the Blockbuster Bowl and finished ninth in the final college football rankings. As a senior he appeared in 10 games, missing three contests due to a fracture of his left shoulder blade.

During his Stanford career, Williams recorded 141 tackles and 11 tackles for loss. He was a District 8 Academic All-American and a first-team Academic All-Pac-10 selection as both a junior and senior. He was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 pick as a senior in 1992. While at Stanford he played for head coaches Jack Elway, Dennis Green and Walsh. His position coach was vonAppen.

Williams graduated from Stanford in 1992 with honors as a history major and as a Rhodes Scholar Candidate. After playing briefly with the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent in 1993, Williams returned to Stanford where he served as a defensive graduate assistant under Walsh for two seasons and earned his master's degree in university administration in 1995. Following the 1995 season, he spent five months in Japan as the defensive coordinator for the semi-pro Fujitsu Frontiers.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Williams attended Trinity Valley College Preparatory School, where he earned all-state honors in football, basketball and baseball.

In June, 2000, he and his wife, Tonya, were married on Oahu.
