Coach Bender on Luton
"Deon is our go-to guy. At the end of a shot clock we've got to get the ball in Deon's hands. As much as we depend on him to score, we need for him to guard some of the other top scorers that he will be matched up against. He developed a lot of pride in his defense, especially in the last year. He's come a long way in that regard. When you consider the fact that when he first came to our program he was having to make the adjustment from being a high school center to being a true college guard and each and every year having to prove that he can add something to his game from just being a shooter. He's done a good job in his progression of his skill level. It will be very important for him to take an even greater step this year. He will face a lot of different approaches to take him out of the game, to deny him the ball and not allow him to catch it in his comfort areas. He's got to find other ways to score rather than just being a jump shooter. Being able to put the ball on the floor and get to the middle of the lane will be things that will help him handle the attention that he will get defensively."

Deon Luton played center at Del City High School. He has successfully made the transition to the perimeter as his 3-point prowess can attest. Last year, he became the school's career 3-point leader after eclipsing the previous record of 119 established by Eldridge Recasner from1987 to 1990. Luton enters the 1999-2000 campaign with 152 career 3-pointers. During the 1997-98 season, Luton broke two school 3-point records. He set a new single-game standard with seven treys at USC on Jan. 29, topping Greg Hill's mark of six set in 1986. Luton also broke Hill's 1987 single-season record of 68, increasing the 3-point record to 75.
