Assistant Coach

Donny Harrel, who joined the Husky coaching staff prior to the 2005 season, enters his fourth year as an assistant on the UW staff.

Harrel's first season at Washington included the noteworthy accomplishment of seeing the Huskies lead the nation in fielding percentage. The UW's .978 fielding percentage, a number reached in large part due to excellent infield play, led all of Division I. The Dawgs also ranked second in the nation in double plays.

Last year, 2007, all three of the Huskies' starting infielders who were eligible for the draft were selected.

Harrel, who works primarily with infielders and also assists in the hitting instruction and recruiting, combines experience in the Pac-10 with a great deal of success as a head coach and a familiarity with the Northwest baseball scene.

Harrel came to Washington from Oregon State, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach and worked with OSU's outfielders and catchers. In 2004, his last year at OSU, two Beavers outfielders were named to the All-Pac-10 first team.

Prior to his time at Oregon State, Harrel spent eight seasons as head coach at Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore. He was named the Community College Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1999, after Lane College won the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) championship and set a school record for wins. Harrel also received NWAACC Southern Region Coach of the Year honors four times.

While at Lane, Harrel also coached the Eugene Challengers to an American Legion state championship. Additionally, he served as coach of the Bend Elks college summer team. While with the Elks, Harrel coached former Huskies Taylor Johnson, David Dowling and Greg Isaacson

Before coaching at Lane, Harrel was an assistant coach at Clackamas (Ore.) Community College, Bakersfield (Calif.) College and Taft (Calif.) College.

Harrel, earned his bachelor's degree in sociology in 1995 from Cal State Bakersfield. He spent three seasons as a player in the Kansas City Royals organization. Harrel received a master's degree in educational administration and supervision from the University of Phoenix in 2000.
