Nicole Minett
Position: Women's Novice Coach
Nicole Minett begins her first season as the women's novice coach at Washington. Minett, a former Washington rower, returns to the UW after a five-year run as the novice coach at the University of Wisconsin. "Nicole is a Husky, that's the most important thing," said Director of Rowing and women's head coach Bob Ernst. "She has a lot of coaching experience now and is a great recruiter and a great teacher. Washington and Wisconsin are similar in that they are both state schools that draw a lot of gifted athletes who were all-state performers in other sports and who chose the school for academic reasons. We take those athletes and make them into top-notch rowers. One of Nicole's main responsibilities will be to bring the new rowers up to speed." Minett, a Toronto native, rowed for the Huskies from 1998-2001, earning All-Pac-10 honors in 2001. During her outstanding rowing career, Minett helped Washington to two national titles, rowing as a member of the varsity four in 1998 and the varsity eight in 2001. Her crew also won the Royal Henley Regatta in 2000 and she helped the Huskies to four consecutive Pac-10 crowns. In addition, Minett was a member of the Canadian national team in 2001 and 2002, rowing in both the eight and four. With the Canadian team, Minett competed in the World Championships in 2001 in Lucerne, Switzerland and in the World University Games and Commonwealth Championships in 2002. She earned three medals for the Candian team, taking gold in the coxless four at the World University Games and silver in both the eight and the coxless four at the Commonwealth Championships. From 1991-2001, Minett rowed at Canadian Henley, earning 10 gold medals. In 2003, Minett joined the coaching staff at the University of Wisconsin, where she was hired as an assistant coach to the varsity women's crew. Midway through her first season, she assumed co-head coaching duties of the varsity squad when the previous head coach departed. Under Minett, the women's varsity made a return to the NCAA Championships after a four-year absence. That season, the Badgers took second in the Big Ten and third in the Central Region Championship. The following season, Minett took over the novice rowing program, coaching her squads to an undefeated season in 2006 and a fourth-place NCAA finish in 2007. Minett's 2008 squad boasted depth as her first novice eight won both the Big Ten title and the South Central Regional title, while her second novice eight also earned Big Ten gold. Minett has also been active on the national level, serving as an assistant coach for the US Rowing Freshman Women's identification camp in Madison, Wis. from 2005-2007 and as associate head coach for US Rowing Women's Midwest Pre-Elite Development Camp from 2004-2005. Minett and her husband, Charles, also a former Washington rower, reside in Ballard. Education
