Midway through his third season with Washington, Gherst took over as the 1st Assistant Coach and recruiting coordinator for the men's program. Gherst is responsible for coaching the freshmen as well as handling recruiting duties under Head Coach Michael Callahan. In 2013, Gherst's freshmen eight went undefeated, earning gold medals at both the Pac-12 and IRA National Championships. This summer Gherst will join Coach Callahan and the varsity and second varsity eights as they head overseas to compete in the Grand Challenge Cup and Ladies Plate at the historic Henley Royal Regatta July 3rd-8th.

In his 2nd season at Washington, Gherst primarily coached the fours, leading the Varsity 4+ to a third consecutive undefeated regular season. Postseason success was just as sweet, as the Huskies captured a gold medal at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships, and then a national title in both the Varsity 4+ and Open 4+ at the IRA Championships in June. Over the summer, Gherst assisted coach Callahan with the Freshmen 8 and their trip to the Henley Royal Regatta where they won the Temple Challenge Cup.

Gherst joined the Husky program after four seasons at Dartmouth College, where he was the Big Green's freshmen coach.

Gherst is a 1997 graduate of the University of Vermont with a degree in political science. Gherst coxed on his alma mater's rowing team, and later with the Pennsylvania Athletic Club. He then coached the Catamounts as the women's freshmen coach from 1997-98 before becoming the head coach from 1998-2000.

Gherst left Burlington to become the head coach at the University of Rhode Island from 2000-2006. In 2004, Gherst led Rhode Island to the best season in school history, medaling at the New England Championships, ECAC Invitational and taking the team to its first Henley Royal Regatta.

A graduate of the Overlake High School in Redmond, Gherst now lives in Seattle with his wife Karen. He enjoys running and is training to compete in an ultra marathon. Also has his private pilot's license.
