SEATTLE - Cal Poly hit four homers and used a seven-run fifth inning to beat the Washingon baseball team, 12-1, Sunday at Husky Ballpark, taking the three-game series, two games to one.
The Mustangs, who won on Friday and lost Saturday, improved to 5-6 on the season while the Huskies' record fell to 5-6 as well.
Poly starter Steven Fischback (2-1) picked up the win, limiting the Huskies to only one run on five hits over his six innings of work. Husky starter Elliott Cribby (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits over four and one-third innings.
The Huskies took the lead in the third when a trio of freshmen at the bottom of the Huskies' batting order combined to scratch a run. Second baseman Julien Pollard led off with a double, moved to third on a flyout from shortstop David Bentrott and scored on a Brendan Gardner-Young groundout, giving the UW a 1-0 lead.
The following inning, Cal Poly opened with back-to-back singles from Pat Pezet and Logan Schafer. A sacrifice fly from Kyle Smith plated Pezet from third to tie the score at 1-1.
In the fifth, after a walk to David Van Ostrand, Cal Poly catcher Josh Thomas homered to right field, giving the Mustangs a 3-1 lead. Adam Melker followed with a double before Luke Yoder's fourth homer of the season - and third of the weekend - made it 5-1.
The Mustangs continued with their big fifth as left fielder Ryan Lee connected for a two-out, two-run single off of reliever Jorden Merry. Then, after a catcher's interference call kept the inning alive, Thomas singled to drive in a seventh run, putting Cal Poly on top 8-1.
In the sixth, the Mustangs got a leadoff homer from second baseman Pat Pezet and an RBI single from J.J. Thompson, upping the lead to 10-1.
Poly's fourth homer, a solo shot from Smith, and an RBI single from Melker, both in the eighth, made it 12-1.
The Huskies continue the 14-game homestand next weekend with a pair of noon doubleheaders next Saturday and Sunday against Holy Cross.
