Box Score

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team capped an unlikely ninth-inning rally on a dropped fly ball that allowed two runs to score as the Huskies beat Washington State, 3-2, Thursday night at Husky Ballpark.

Washington, winner of six straight, entered the ninth trailing 2-1. After two quick outs, WSU closer Adam Conley hit Caleb Brown with a pitch and Jacob Lamb reached on catcher's interference. Pierce Rankin, who had earlier homered to give the UW its only run, then lofted a ball to shallow left field that went in and out of the glove of WSU left fielder Brett Jacobs, allowing both runs to score.

Both teams were limited to just three hits on the night as both teams had terrific pitching performances. UW starter Geoff Brown a junior from Mill Creek allowed two runs on three hits over five and one-third innings. Jacob Clem (2-2) retired the last 10 Cougars in his three and two-thirds innings for the win.

WSU's Chad Arnold pitched eight innings, allowing just one run on just three hits while walking one and fanning eight. He retired the last 10 he faced before giving way to Conley to open the ninth. Conley (1-1) suffered the loss despite not allowing a hit.

The Huskies (13-10 overall, 1-0 in the Pac-10) took the game's first lead in the second when Rankin launched a solo homer to left-center. It was his fifth homer of the season and his fourth in the UW's last six games.

The Cougars (14-8 overall, 0-1 in the Pac-10) tied it at 1-1 in the third as Michael Weber led off with a double and eventually crossed on a sharp groundout from Garry Kuykendall.

In the sixth, WSU took the lead with a run. With the bases loaded and one out, Husky second baseman Doug Cherry tried to start an inning-ending double play on a chopper from Matt Fanelli, but Cherry's back-handed toss to the bag at second was off the mark, allowing Cody Bartlett to score.

The series continues with another 6:00 p.m. game Friday night. Saturday's series finale gets underway at 1:00 p.m. Friday's game will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
