Box Score

DALLAS - A three-run triple from freshman pinch hitter Chase Anselment broke a 4-4 tie and highlighted a four-run ninth inning as the Washington baseball team beat Dallas Baptist, 7-4, in game one of a three-game series Thursday night at Patriot Field.

The Huskies improved to 9-10 while Dallas Baptist, which beat fifth-ranked TCU earlier this week, fell to 14-8.

Washington led much of the way, but gave up one in the seventh and two in the eighth to fall behind 4-3.

In the top of the ninth, two walks and an error loaded the bases for UW senior second baseman Doug Cherry, who singled to center to tie the game at 4-4. Anselment, a freshman from Edmonds, then came up as a pinch hitter and delivered a bases-clearing triple to left-center.

Cherry finished the game 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Pierce Rankin was 2-for-5 with a double, a homer and three RBI.

The Huskies got a solid start from junior lefty Geoff Brown, who allowed two runs on three hits over six innings. Junior Adrian Gomez, who struck out the only batter he faced to end the eighth, got the win to improve to 2-0.

Washington jumped out to the quick lead with two runs in the first. Left fielder Bradley Boyer doubled to lead off and Cherry followed with a bunt single. After Cherry stole second, Rankin belted a double to score both runners, giving the UW a 2-0 lead.

The Patriots notched their first run in the second to cut it to 2-1. Ryan Enos was hit by a pitch to lead off and then scored from first on a Travis Meiners double.

After the double, Brown retired the next 11 Patriot batters in a row before surrendering a two-out single in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Rankin led off with his third homer of the season and his second in as many games to make it 3-1. In the seventh, DBU got one back when Enos led off with his sixth homer of the year, ending Brown's pitching outing.

In the eighth, DBU took its first lead. After a leadoff single and a bunt put a runner at second with two outs, Austin Knight belted a two-run homer, giving the Patriots a 4-3 advantage.

Dallas Baptist closer Duncan McAlpine (1-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on two hits in one inning.

The three-game series continues with a 4:30 p.m. PT game on Friday and then wraps up Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. PT first pitch.
