Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis emerged from a seesaw game with a 7-5 victory over the Washington baseball team Sunday at Dobbins Stadium, capping the opening weekend of the NCAA Division I college season.

Three times Washington (1-3) took leads, but each time the Aggies (3-1) answered the call, taking the lead for good in the fifth, despite later threats from the Huskies.

UW starter Zach Wright (0-2), who had appeared in relief on Saturday, was stuck with the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits over four and one-third innings. UC Davis reliever Spencer Henderson (1-0) gave up two runs over three innings for the win and Max Cordy pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

Washington got three hits and an RBI from sophomore first baseman Trevor Mitsui.

As in the previous three games, there was scoring in the first inning Sunday. The Huskies got on the board when leadoff hitter Braden Bishop opened the game by reaching on a hit by pitch. After moving up on an errant pickoff and a bunt, he scored from third on a Jayce Ray groundout.

UC Davis drew even in the bottom of the first as Tino Lipson led off with a double and eventually scored on an single from Nick Lynch, tying the score at 1-1.

Washington grabbed back the lead with a run in the fourth. After a leadoff walk to Andrew Ely, followed by a bunt and a flyout, Mitsui laced a single up the middle to put the UW in front, 2-1.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Aggies rallied for a run in the bottom of the fourth. After two quick outs, an infield single and two walks loaded the bases for Lipson, who was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run.

Washington took the lead back in the fifth with two more runs. Freshman catcher Austin Rei got it started with a one-out single before freshman Duncan Hendrickson, making his college debut as a pinch hitter, belted a double down the left-field line to drive him in. Pinch runner Ty Afenir then took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Bishop groundout to make it a 4-2 Husky advantage.

The Aggies replied again in the bottom of the inning as a pair of singles put runners on the corners with one out for Steven Patterson, whose single to left-center dropped in to drive in one. After a second out, UCD catcher Spencer Brann sent a game-tying single through the right side, scoring a second run to tie the game, but the ball got past the UW right fielder, allowing Patterson to come all the way around to give Davis a 5-4 edge.

UC Davis increased its lead in the sixth with two more runs. After a leadoff walk, a double from John Williams scored one run. Two outs later, Nick Lynch doubled to deep right, driving in Williams and making it a 7-4 Aggies lead.

Washington cut into the lead with one in the seventh as Rei reached on an error and eventually scored on a two-out single from Andrew Ely. In the eighth, the UW loaded the bases with one out on a single and two hit batters, but Davis reliever Zach Williams got a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat with his team still in front, 7-5.

Washington returns to the road for another weekend when its travels to Beaumont, Texas, for a four-game tournament. The Huskies will face Lamar and Creighton twice each next Friday through Sunday.
