SEATTLE - The Washington women's basketball team begins its preparation for the 2005-06 season this weekend as the Huskies open official practice starting Friday, Oct. 14.
Washington's practice Friday evening will be closed to the public, but both sets Saturday on the main floor at Bank of America Arena, 10-11 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., will be open.
The Huskies return 14 letterwinners and all five starters from last year's squad that finished 14-16 overall and 9-9 in Pac-10 play. Led by senior co-captains Kayla Burt (Sr., G), Nicole Castro (Sr., G) and Kristen O'Neill (Sr., G/F), this year's squad looks to build upon its veteran talent. For the first time in three years, the roster features more upperclassmen (10) than underclassmen (five).
Washington also returns 2005 All-Pac-10 honorable mention honorees Jill Bell (Jr., F) and Cameo Hicks (Jr., G), along with Pac-10 All-Freshman honorable mention selection Dominique Banks (So., G). UW welcomes one newcomer in Heidi McNeill, a 6-3 forward from Oak Harbor, Wash.
The Huskies will tune-up for the regular season hosting an exhibition with the Northwest All-Stars, Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. They will make their official debut with a tough season opening road trip at Alabama, Friday, Nov. 18 (3:30 p.m. PT) and Florida State, Sunday, Nov. 20 (10 a.m. PT).
UW will be challenged early, with five games in the first 10 days of the season. Washington makes its home debut versus Utah, Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. and will host its annual Husky Classic Nov. 26-27. Also on the slate is a trip to defending NCAA champion Baylor on Friday, Dec. 2 (5 p.m. PT) and Texas A&M, Sunday, Dec. 4 (12:30 p.m. PT.
